1. What is an NRCTA?
NRCTA stands for Non-Resident Convertible Taka Account. It is a Taka-denominated account introduced by Bangladesh Bank for Non-Resident Bangladeshis (NRBs).
2. Who can open an NRCTA?
An NRB can open and maintain an NRCTA with an Offshore Banking Unit (OBU) of a scheduled bank in Bangladesh.
3. In what form can I open an NRCTA?
The account can be maintained as savings, current, fixed deposit, or other forms offered by the OBU.
4. What currency is the NRCTA denominated in?
The NRCTA is denominated in Taka (BDT). Deposits maintained in deposit form will carry market-driven interest/profit.
5. How can I deposit fund in my NRCTA from abroad?
You can fund the account through inward remittances received through banking channels. Foreign currency remittances can also be credited after conversion into Taka.
6. Can I transfer money from my foreign currency account?
Yes. Funds from private foreign currency accounts or non-resident foreign currency deposit accounts may be credited to the NRCTA after conversion into Taka.
7. Can I transfer funds from another NRCTA?
Yes. Transfers from other NRCTAs are permitted.
8. Will my NRCTA earn interest/profit?
Yes. Interest/profit accruing on funds held in the account may be credited to the NRCTA. For deposit-form NRCTAs, the interest/profit rate is market driven.
9. Can I take my money back abroad?
Yes. Both the principal and accrued interest/profit are freely repatriable abroad.
10. Can I use the NRCTA balance in Bangladesh?
Yes. local disbursements are allowed through the respective bank.
11. Can I invest my NRCTA funds in Bangladesh?
Yes, Funds may be used to purchase shares under FDI or transferred to a Non-resident Investor’s Taka Account (NITA) for portfolio investment.
12. Can I obtain a loan against my NRCTA deposit?
As an NRB, you may obtain a loan by keeping your NRCTA deposit as a lien. The loan may be used for personal purposes or eligible business activities, subject to applicable regulations.The facility may also be used for non-repatriable direct investment in Bangladesh or to acquire residential property for your own use.
13. Can I deposit any amount of foreign currency into my NRCTA?
Yes, there is no minimum or maximum deposit limit.
