Bangladesh Bank regulates and supervises the banking companies and financial institutions of the country vide Article 7A(f) of Bangladesh Bank Order, 1972 and Section 44 of the Bank Companies Act, 1991.
Department of Banking Inspection-8 supervises the activities of the following 12 Banks:

- The department carries out on-site inspection on these 12 banks. The inspections are broadly categorized as:
- a) Comprehensive Inspection;
- b) Core Risk Inspection;
- c) Special Inspection.
Comprehensive inspections are carried out as per inspection program prepared annually. The inspections give emphasis on proper classification and provisioning of the bank assets. Regulatory capital requirement of the banks are also assessed during comprehensive inspections. Compliance with various guidelines/ instructions/ circulars issued by Bangladesh Bank and other pertinent regulatory bodies are also examined through comprehensive inspections.
Among the key risk areas of the banks Core Risk Inspection of DBI-8 covers Credit Risk Management (CRM), Internal Control and Compliance (ICC), Asset-Liability Management (ALM), Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML-CFT) System.
Special inspections are carried out in addition to routine inspection programs. Sometimes these inspections are carried out as per request of other departments of Bangladesh Bank including BRPD.
